According to the new rules of admission to the International Legion of Ukraine, candidates only need to apply online. This simplification of the system for recruiting foreigners into the Armed Forces of Ukraine has allowed to attract even more citizens ready to join the defence of world security together with Ukraine. The demand for contract service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine remains at a high level even today.


Peculiarities of military service in Ukraine for foreigners


According to the Law of Ukraine "On Military Duty and Military Service", foreign citizens and stateless persons can join military service voluntarily (under contract). In order to effectively attract fighters from other countries, Ukraine has a temporary visa-free regime for foreign citizens and stateless persons who intend to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine (in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 82/2022).


Private, sergeant and senior officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are accepted for service under contract in accordance with the contract concluded with them (part 2 of Article 2, part 1 of Article 211 of the Law of Ukraine "On Military Duty and Military Service").


A probationary period of two months is established for foreigners and stateless persons. A contract may be signed for a period of:

  • 3 years (for persons of ordinary staff);
  • 3 to 5 years (for non-commissioned officers and petty officers).

The contract may be terminated at the request of the foreigner or extended after its expiry.


Monetary support for foreigners in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is determined at the same level as for Ukrainian citizen servicemen. In addition, for foreign citizens and stateless persons there is a lump-sum monetary aid in case of death (death) of a serviceman (payment is received by family members or parents), disability or temporary disability (payment is received by the serviceman).
